In the Tabula generalis (completed in January 1294), Ramon Lull had introduced a rigid simplification of the combinatorial mechanism which lies at the basis of his Art. Both his Lectura compendiosa Tabulae generalis (op. 54) and Lectura super tertiam figuram Tabulae generalis (op. 55), written in Italy between 1294 and 1296, represent the exegetical apparatus of the Tabula. The Lectura compendiosa presents the contents of the Tabula in a synthetic way, as the title conveys. Of the second Lectura, originally devoted to the third figure of Lull?s Art, only the first part has survived. It is related to the ten Artistic rules.
Though being propaedeutic to a more important work (Tabula generalis), these lectures should not be thought of as marginal or as mere supplements. If on the one hand they refer to didactic practices and foster the spreading of the method through its simplification, on the other hand they testify and strengthen the centrality of the Art in Lull?s thought.
The Liber de sexto sensu, i.e. De affatu (op. 56) is an important little treatise on the philosophy of language, presenting language as a sixth sense added to the five classical senses. Flores amoris et intelligentiae (op. 57), the Disputatio quinque hominum sapientium (op. 58), and the Petitio Raimundi pro conuersione infidelium ad Coelestinum V papam (op. 59), all three of them originally composed in Catalan and completed in Naples in 1294, were intended to be presented to pope Celestine V. After the pope?s premature resignation on December 13, 1294, Lull prepared a revised Latin translation of the Petitio for Celestine?s successor Boniface VIII, the Petitio Raimundi pro conuersione infidelium ad Bonifatium VIII papam (op. 60). | Aggiungi al Carrello |

Der letzte Teil, der anhand der Figuren 198 Fragen beantwortet, zeigt deutlich, dass Lull seinem Sohn hier eine Kurzeinweisung in seine Ars geben möchte. Genau dies scheint im 15. Jahrhundert auf großes Interesse gestoßen zu sein, wie die reiche handschriftliche Überlieferung zeigt.
De leuitate et ponderositate elementorum (1294) ist eines der medizinischen Werke Lulls, in dem er die Theorie der Grade der vier Elemente in der Mischung und in der Zusammensetzung der Arzneien behandelt. Im ersten Teil schreibt Lull über die Sphäre der vier Elemente und ihre Gradation in den einfachen Arzneien, im zweiten antwortet er auf dreißig medizinische Fragen. Da der Text in zwei erheblich voneinander abweichenden Redaktionen erhalten ist, hat die Editorin sich entschlossen, diese in synoptischem Druck darzustellen.
Das kleine Werk Lo desconhort (lateinisch Desolatio Raimundi oder Liber de desolatione) entstand aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach im Jahr 1295. Es ist ein sprachliches Meisterstück des Dichters Lull, der hier Theologie und Lyrik mit Philosophie und Selbstbiographie in Form eines Dialoges verknüpft. Trotz der breiten katalanischen Überlieferung sowie zahlreicher, auch früher Übersetzungen in die Volkssprachen wurde es nie als Ganzes ins Lateinische übertragen. Ulli Roth, der für die Edition der Arbor Philosophiae verantwortlich zeichnet, ist Gymnasiallehrer in Offenburg und Privatdozent an der Theologischen Fakultät der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. Die Editorin des Liber de leuitate et ponderositate elementorum, Carla Compagno, hat im Juni 2010 im Fach Lateinische Philologie des Mittelalters an der Universität Freiburg promoviert. This short but very popular work extant in over seventy manuscripts was a concise and much more easily digestible version of the much longer Ars generalis ultima, the final redaction of Llull?s Art. In Senigallia in the March of Ancona in July or August 1474, the Ars breuis was translated into Hebrew and then copied twice over the next couple of years. The colophon of the extant copy shows that these Jewish students of the Ars breuis used the work to attain unio mystica. This seems to be a unique example of a Christian work, described as being ?short in quantity but great in quality?, knowingly being used by Jews for mystical purposes.
The translator and copyists seem to have read and understood Llull?s work through the prism of Abulafian Kabbalah. Abraham Abulafia (d. ca. 1291), a contemporary of Llull?s, wrote numerous works dealing with the divine names and the combination of letters. He believed that the whole Torah was the names of God, and by manipulating the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, one could have knowledge of the divine and created world. This Jewish circle seemed to have understood the letters of the Lullian alphabet and the various combinations and compartments of the Ars breuis as leading to true mystical cognition.
This volume presents the Hebrew edition together with the original Latin (based on a slightly revised edition of ROL 12 / CC CM 38) along with an English translation and detailed notes which show how the Jewish translator and copyists understood and used this work.
This edition was prepared under the auspices of the ERC project ?Latin Philosophy into Hebrew: Intercultural Networks in thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Europe?.

Darüber hinaus stellt Lull allgemeine Beobachtungen über das menschliche Leben an und gibt Empfehlungen moralischer Art wie auch Ratschläge zu Fragen der Gesundheit und Erziehung. Da das ursprünglich auf Katalanisch abgefasste Werk in drei unterschiedlichen lateinischen Übersetzungen erhalten ist, hat der Editor sich entschlossen, eine vierspaltige Textausgabe zu erarbeiten, in der die katalanische Originalfassung zusammen mit den drei Übersetzungen in synoptischem Druck erscheint.
In den mystisch-spekulativen Orationes et contemplationes intellectus führen die drei Seelenkräfte Verstand, Gedächtnis und Wille ein allegorisches Gespräch in zehn Teilen. Diese sind der Existenz Gottes und seinen neun Grundwürden bonitas, magnitudo, aeternitas, potestas, sapientia, voluntas, perfectio, gloria und virtus gewidmet, zu deren Betrachtung sich der Verstand mit Hilfe der beiden anderen Seelenkräfte erhebt.

The Ars demonstrativa was the second version of the
Lullian Ars, and revised and completed the Ars
compendiosa inveniendi veritatem (1274). It was composed in
Montpellier in 1283. The work is accompanied by Figures and an
Alphabet; the former are graphic symbols which make the structural
components of the Ars visible and facilitate the operation
of the combinatorial mechanisms and the calculations. As regards
the Alphabet, the letters A S T V X Y and Z represent the Figures
mentioned above, while the others namely those between B
and R serve to designate the concepts contained within
Figure S, the figure pertaining to the rational soul.
The Ars demonstrativa has four parts or
distinctions, of which the final part is a list of
questions relating to the preceding parts, accompanied by their
corresponding solutions in symbolic notation. The first distinction
gives a detailed description of the figures. The second distinction
expounds the conditions of the Ars, the
mechanisms which enable the reader to obtain information on the
basis of the principles from Figures A V X, with a view to
discovering the truth or falsity Figures Y Z by
using Figures T and S, which establish relationships between the
principles. The third distinction offers sixteen modes, or rather,
applications for the mechanisms of the Ars, which are:
remembering, understanding, loving, believing, contemplating,
finding, ordering, preaching, expounding, resolving, judging,
showing, disputing, advising, accustoming, curing.

This volume offers the first comprehensive introduction in
English to the study of the philosopher and theologian Raimundus
Lullus (c. 1232-1316).
From the 1270s onwards Lullus worked on his Art: a
philosophico-theological system which takes the basic concepts of
the three monotheistic religions of its time and discusses them by
means of rational discourse in order to convince Muslims (and Jews)
of the truth of the Christian articles of faith. Revising his Art
and extending it across all fields of human knowledge, Lullus
created a universal science that strongly influenced thinkers such
as Nicholas of Cusa and Leibniz. He produced some 280 works in both
Catalan and Latin, the Latin Opera currently being edited
in the Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis
series.
The present Introduction provides a key to Lullus
prolific philosophical and theological output. It is divided into
three sections: Lullus' life, his works and his thought, i.e. the
Ars. The first section offers a survey of
Lullus eventful life (his conversion, illumination, travels,
etc.) and presents the historical context for his intellectual
projects. The second section offers a full catalogue of all his
works, together with a short summary of each of them, an
appreciation of their importance and basic bibliographical
information concerning editions and further literature. The third
section gives an explanation of Lullus Art, its mechanisms
and its philosophical implications; it also shows how his thought
manifested itself in the different realms of knowledge: natural,
human and divine.
The book is the result of a joint effort by international
scholars specialising in Lullus, who have been working on this

Lullus' Quattuor libri principiorum were developed from
the Ars compendiosa inueniendi ueritatem. They were
probably written in the period ca. 1274-1283. In these four
books we find the main rules of Lullian Art in an early stage,
as a muster of Lullus'universal knowledge system. These books are
here set together to show the unity of method for theology,
philosophy and justice. The traditional matters about medicine are
explained with the existing logical constraints taken into account.
The chapters on generation and corruption, fever, urine and pulse
show the current theory of humours and the optimal levels of the
four natural elements, preventive treatments, and the means to
recover from illness. The book Principia medicinae is the
only one that has parallel textual Catalan tradition.

Dieser Band XXX der Raimundi Lulli
opera latina enthält die Werke, die Ramon Lull in den Jahren 1301-1302
während seiner Reise in den Vorderen Orient verfasst hat. Im September
1301 beendete er im Johannes Chrisostomus Kloster auf der Insel Zypern
die Rhetorica nova. Dieses Werk, das ursprünglich katalanisch verfasst
wurde und im Jahre 1303 in Genua ins Lateinische übersetzt worden ist,
will eine Anleitung zur Predigt und Überredungskunst nach den
Prinzipien der lullschen Ars sein. Ebenfalls auf Zypern im Dezember
desselben Jahres fertigte er, in der Stadt Famagusta, den Liber de
natura, eine philosophisch-theologische Abhandlung über den
Naturbegriff, der nicht nur eine zentrale Stellung in der lullschen
Kosmologie beanspruchen darf, sondern auch eine Schlüsselrolle in der
Auseinandersetzung mit den Monophysiten spielte, welche eine
menschliche Natur in Jesus von Nazareth ablehnten. In der zu
Kleinarmenien (Kilikien) gehörenden strategischen Hafenstadt Ayas
verfasste Lull im Januar 1302 eine kleine Lehrfibel mit dem Titel Liber
quid debet homo de Deo credere mit dem Zweck, einerseits den Christen
die Hauptaussagen des christlichen Glaubens über Gott darzulegen und
andererseits den Nichtchristen den christlichen Gottesbegriff bzw. die
spezifischen christlichen Dogmen vor Augen zu führen. Diese
katechetische Anleitung versucht nicht nur über die Irrlehren der
Sarazenen, Nestorianer und Monophysiten zu unterrichten, sodern auch
die falsche Meinung, die viele Nichtchristen von christlichen Glauben
haben, zu widerlegen. Schließlich wird in diesem Band der Liber de
mille proverbiis ediert, ein Werk, das Lull im Mittelmeer auf der
Heimreise nach Mallorca geschrieben hat. Auf volkstümlicher einfachen
Art werden hier Sprüche über die göttlichen und kardinalen Tugende,
über die menschlichen Laster, über das Reden, über Armut und Reichtum,
über das angemessene Handeln und die richtige Intention vorgelegt.
Dieses Buch will eine praktische Ergänzung zur vorherigen theoretischen
Abhandlung sein. Wie in den jeweiligen Vorworte vorgetragen wird,
beabsichtigt Ramon Lull die hermetische Struktur seiner
allgemeinen Kunst, auf spezielle
Wissensbereiche theoretisch und praktisch anzuwenden.

Nachdem Lull dem
intellektuellen Erkennen und Erforschen der Realität die Ars
inventiva (op. 44) gewidmet hatte, versuchte er in der Ars amativa darzustellen, wie die
erkannte und verstandene Realität durch die Willenskraft bzw. durch die
Liebe intensiv angeeignet wird. Dient die Ars inventiva der
Gotteserkenntnis, so die Ars amativa der Gottesliebe. Die Ars
amativa gehört in die Struktur der ars lulliana, von der sie
ihr ontologisches Fundament, ihre argumentative Logik und die
Kombinatorik der vier in der Ars inventiva entwickelten Figuren
übernimmt. Zu Beginn werden die achtzehn Prinzipien vorgestellt, welche
anschließend durch die Figuren visualisiert und dem kombinatorischen
System integriert werden. Im zweiten Teil werden die in zwei Gruppen
geordneten Regeln, d. h. achtzehn Modalitäten, vorgestellt, die sowohl
für das Erforschen und Erkennen des Wahren wie für das Wollen und
Lieben des Guten eingesetzt werden müssen. Im dritten Teil werden die
achtzehn principia artis in bezug auf die Liebe bestimmt, um die
spezifischen Aspekte einer Kunst der Liebe zu entfalten.
Nach einer einleitenden philosophischen Erörterung wird die für Lull
entscheidende dynamische Funktion des Liebens in der Erkenntnis der
Realität angesprochen. Im vierten Teil werden die behandelten principia charakterisiert und
personifiziert. Anhand der vierten Figur der Ars inventiva
werden dann 833 Bedingungen aufgestellt, die aus allen
möglichen Kombinationen zwischen den in Dreiergruppen aufgeteilten
achtzehn principia entstehen.
Diese Bedingungen sind kurze, ähnlich den
moralischen Metaphern des berühmten Liber amici et
amati formulierte Erzählungen: Die zu handelnden Personen
verwandelten Prinzipien reden, zeigen Gefühle und diskutieren unter
sich, jedes in der ihm vorher per definitionem zugeschriebenen
Rolle. Im fünften Teil werden zunächst 833 Fragen gestellt, eine zu
jeder im vorangehenden Teil erzählten Bedingung, und
danach zwanzig ausführliche Fragen, die mittels Kombination innerhalb
der Figuren entstanden sind und auf die je eine Lösung folgt. Im Epilog
erscheinen die personifizierten Prinzipien zusammen mit der Liebe, dem
Freund und dem Geliebten auf einer Bühne und fordern die Prinzipien
auf, sich mehr um die Liebe zu kümmern und die einseitige Ausrichtung
auf den Intellekt zu beenden.
Die Edition des
zweiten, wesentlich kürzeren Textes dieses Bandes, Quaestiones quas quaesivit quidam frater
minor, hat freundlicherweise Prof. Dr. Francesco Santi,
Lecce/Firenze, übernommen. Wir danken ihm dafür, daß er seine Erfahrung
und Kompetenz bei der Edition lateinischer Texte des Mittelalters in
den Dienst der Herausgabe dieses kleinen, wichtigen und bislang
unedierten Werkes Lulls gestellt hat. Es handelt sich um eine Sammlung
von 32 Fragen, die laut Lull von einem Franziskaner, der im Text nicht
in Erscheinung tritt, gestellt wurden und mit Hilfe der Ars
inventiva, teils
auch der Ars amativa und vor allem des Liber chaos gelöst werden. Es geht vor
allem um naturphilosophische Fragen (erste Ursache, Schöpfung, Ewigkeit
der Welt, Zeit und Raum), aber auch um das Verhältnis zwischen der
Sprache der zeitgenössischen Metaphysik und der lullschen
Theologie.

Denn,
wenn unsere Liebe Frau nicht wäre, dann wäre Gott nicht Mensch
geworden, und wenn Gott nicht Mensch geworden wäre, hätte er die Welt
nicht erschaffen. Denn Gott hat die Welt erschaffen, damit Gott Mensch
werden könne (Liber de sancta Maria). In diesen Sätzen
wird zum Ausdruck gebracht, welche wichtige Rolle Maria in der
Gedankenwelt Lulls spielte. Die marianische Frömmigkeit Lulls setzt
sich auffällig vom zeitgenössischen Wunderglauben ab, Maria ist nicht
bloß Objekt der Fürbitte äußerer Güter, sondern Inbegriff ontologischer
und logischer Vollkommenheit. So ist sie konsequenterweise nicht nur
Ausgangspunkt der Menschwerdung, sondern auch Ursprung und Weg der
gesamten theologischen Reflexion. Das hier edierte Buch ist, wie auch
in einem der zahlreichen Titel, die dieses Werk im Laufe der Zeit
bekommen hat, ausgedrückt wird, ein Mariale in quaestiones
difficiles, also kein Devotionale. Lulls Marienkult ist
nicht nur Sublimierung seiner jugendlichen Minnelyrik, er ist auch ein
Spiegel seiner ganzen Philosophie, die auf jegliches formales
scholastisches Profil verzichtet, um sich in einer
katechetisch-missionarischen Sprache ausdrücken zu können. Der Liber
de sancta Maria bleibt im gesamten uvre Lulls in
stilistischer und inhaltlicher Hinsicht einzigartig. Es ist kein
Zufall, dass Jacobus Faber Stapulensis dieses Werk aus der
Vergessenheit holte und ihm sehr früh durch eine vorbildliche
Druckausgabe zu einer großen Verbreitung verhalf. Es ist auch
bezeichnend, dass dieser Gelehrte, der in anderen Ausgaben von Werken
Lulls den Stil dem Zeitgeschmack anpaßte und korrigierte, bei diesem
Werk die ursprüngliche und unmittelbare Sprache Lulls fast unverändert
übernahm. Dem hier edierten Text hat die Herausgeberin eine
Untersuchung über die Grundlagen des marianischen Diskurses Lulls
vorangestellt.
Zusätzlich zu diesem Werk wird in dem vorliegenden Band auch ein vom
Umfang her kleineres Beispiel des unermüdlichen literarischen Schaffens
Lulls vorgelegt. Mit dem Liber de passagio hat Lull unmittelbar
nach dem für die gesamte Christenheit schockierenden Fall von Akkon zu
den brennenden politischen Fragen seiner Zeit Stellung genommen. In
dieser Bittschrift an Nikolaus IV., den ersten aus dem
Franziskanerorden stammenden Papst, nimmt Lull auf sehr originelle Art
Stellung zu Fragen des Umgangs mit den anderen Religionen, wobei die
Frage nach der Gewaltanwendung nicht ausgeklammert wird. Es ist
jedenfalls das erste Werk, in dem Lull den Kreuzzug thematisiert.
Gegenüber jedem neuen Papst wird Lull dann jeweils seine aktuelle Sicht
der Dinge vorlegen. Diese Werke haben in der Literatur zu Lull in den
letzten Jahren für einigen Diskussionsstoff gesorgt. Eine ausführliche
Einleitung versucht, die ideengeschichtlichen Voraussetzungen des
Liber de passagio vor Augen zu führen und dem originellen
Charakter dieser Stellungnahme Lulls in ihrem Kontext Rechnung zu
tragen.

Band der Raimundi Lulli opera latina ist der Edition der
Tabula generalis gewidmet, die Ramon Llull im Januar 1294 in
Neapel zum Abschluß brachte.Er
hatte Mitte September 1293 im Hafen von Tunis mit der Arbeit an diesem
Werk begonnen, nachdem er wegen seiner Missionspredigten von den
dortigen islamischen Behörden verhaftet, der Stadt verwiesen und unter
Zwang auf ein genuesisches Schiff gebracht worden war. So steht die
Tabula generalis zwar gewissermaßen im Schatten seiner ersten,
erfolglosen Missionsreise, sie markiert aber gleichzeitig einen
Neuanfang im Schaffen Llulls: Mit diesem Werk präsentiert er seine
Ars zum ersten Mal konsequent als allgemeine Wissenschaft, in
deren Darstellung spezifisch christliche Inhalte wie die Trinitätslehre
und die Christologie vermutlich zunächst aus
(missions-)taktischen, schließlich aber auch aus
wissenschaftstheoretischen Gründen - vollständig ausgeklammert
bleiben.
